Spartan Win by 41 over Blackburn

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball team scored a season high 88 points on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans beat Blackburn 88-47 on Jon Davison Court. UD led for all but 11 seconds of the game to win their sixth straight game. The Spartans are now 7-1 on the season.

Dubuque used a balanced scoring attack with 18 different Spartans scoring. Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) led all scorers with 15 points on 7-12 shooting from the field. Backcourt mate Jessica Goetz (Susex, Wis./Arrowhead) also reached double figure with 13 points. Center Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Spartans opened up their biggest lead of the first half when Whiting hit a jumper to put UD up 36-15 with 3:20 left in the half. Dubuque finished the half leading 39-20. The Spartans held a 21-6 advantage in points off turnovers in the period.

With a big lead, the UD bench made a major impact in the second half scoring 33 of teams 49 points. Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) lead the reserves with 12 points. Brittani Graves (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) finished with five rebounds in seven minutes of action. The Spartans largest lead of the game came with 1:43 left when Sara Fruendt (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) made a jumper to put UD up 45 points at 87-42.

As a team, UD dished out 24 assists, led by Whiting and Haylee Nutter (Wonder Lake, Ill./Woodstock) with four each.  Jennifer

The win over Blackburn improved UD’s record to 3-0 against schools in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). The Spartans beat Webster and Fontbonne earlier this week. Dubuque outscored the three SLIAC schools 213-129. The 88 points by Dubuque were the most since they scored 89 against Central on January 6, 2010.
