Spartans 4-1 after 61-51 Loss to UW-Stout

MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN – The University of Dubuque Men’s Basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 61-51 loss to unbeaten UW-Stout (5-0). The Spartans rallied back from an early ten point first half deficit to take a 31-30 lead into the half. Dubuque was looking to capture their second tournament championship of the 2012 season. UD is now 4-1 on the season.

Trailing 22-12 with 8:52 left in the first half, Andre Norris (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) paced a UD 9-0 run with six quick points to change the direction of the first half. The Spartans would eventually take a three point lead with 1:26 left on two free throws and a three-pointer from Mitch Michaelis (LeClaire, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) to give UD a 31-28 lead. Norris would lead Dubuque with 11 points and eight rebounds.

After trailing by as many as seven points in the second half, UD would take their only lead of the second half at 43-42 with a Jordan Townsend (Moline, Ill./Moline Senior) jumper with 8:01 left. After an 8-3 Stout run left UD down five with 3:15 left, Derek Griffin (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) would make two free throws to get UD within three at 52-49. UW-Stout would go on to outscore UD 9-2 over the last 2:36 to pull away from the Spartans.

Chris Frazier (Heidelberg, Germany/Heidelberg) would finish with eight points in the loss. Griffin and Michaelis each finished with seven points.
