Whiting with Career High 31 Points in Spartans Loss

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball team took its game against UW-Platteville down to the wire but were unable to pull off the comeback victory on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans lost 64-62 to the Pioneers despite a career high 31 points from Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock). Dubuque outscored UWP 39-34 in the second half. UD is now 1-1 on the season.
Facing a seven point deficit at the half, the Spartans scored two quick baskets to force a UW-P 30-second timeout. Following the timeout UW-P went on a 12-4 run to open up an 11 point lead but UD responded with a 10-0 run of their own to pull within one. The Spartans upperclassmen took change during the run with the ten points coming from a pair of layups from senior Krystal Pritchett (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), jumpers from seniors Whiting and Jena Darwin (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior), and a jumper from junior Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) to make the score 42-41 Pioneers with 11:51 remaining in the second half.
UD would once again get within one after an Alexis Lozano-Dobbs (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) jumper with 8:46 left in the game but were unable to take the lead in the second half. Lozano-Dobbs finished with five points and six rebounds off the bench before fouling out of the game. UW-P would go on to hit all four of their free-throws in the last 20 seconds of the game as UD was able to get a layup from Whiting and a three-pointer from Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) to keep the pressure on.
The Spartans largest lead of the night came 5:51 into the first half when a Whiting layup put UD ahead by four. Whiting’s 31 points in the game were the most for a Spartan since fellow Woodstock HS grad Jen Nichols went for 31 against UW-Platteville on November 24, 2006. Whiting also finished with a team high five assists and four steals. Remakel finished the game with four blocks.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will travel to Menomonie, Wis. for the UW-Stout Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout on November 24th and 25th. UD opens the tourney with Martin Luther College (0-0) at 1:00 pm on Saturday. They will then play the College of St. Scholastica (0-1) on Sunday morning at 11:00 am. The Stout tournament is a homecoming of sorts for UD Head Coach Mark Noll as he was an assistant coach at UW-Stout before becoming the Spartans coach.
