Spartans Win Tourney Championship, Frazier Named MVP

‎JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS – The University of Dubuque Men’s Basketball team won the Bill Merris Tournament at Illinois College on Saturday afternoon with a 66-60 win over Illinois College.  The Spartans Chris Frazier (Heidelberg, Germany/Heidelberg) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.  Derek Griffin (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) and Jordan Townsend (Moline, Ill./Moline Senior) were also named to the All-Tournament Team. UD is a perfect 2-0 on the year.

Frazier led the Spartans with 21 points on seven three-pointers in the game. He finished the tournament with a total of 37 points and 11 threes.  UD controlled the first half leading throughout and finished with a 29-19 lead going into halftime.

The Dubuque lead would reach 15 on a Griffin layup with 16:33 left in the second half before I.C. went on a 16-0 run over the next six minutes to lead 39-38. The lead was short lived though as Frazier hit a three to put UD up for good with 10:34 left in the game.

Brandon Ferguson (Chicago, Ill./Warren Township) and Griffin each reached double figures in points with 11 and 10 respectively. Townsend finished with a team high 11 rebounds and six assists. Point Guard Isaiah Reeves (Dubuque, Iowa/Vista Ridge) finished with five assists and no turnovers. Tyler Ware (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) chipped in eight points off the bench on 4-4 shooting from the field.

The Spartans either led or were tied for all the game except for one minute and 19 seconds. All eight Spartans who played at least ten minutes scored.
