McDonald and McKee Land on First Team All-IIAC

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras College junior midfielder Kevin Cavers has been named the 2012 IIAC Men’s Soccer Most Valuable Player and Loras College head coach Dan Rothert has been named the 2012 IIAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year. 

The 2012 Spartans reached numerous milestones this season including winning the 100th game in the programs history.  The Spartans finished the season with an 11-6-1 record and finished second in the IIAC at 5-2. UD qualified for the IIAC Tournament for the sixth straight season. They also spent the last eight weeks of the season in the NSCAA Regional Rankings peaking at #4. The Spartans success has extended over the last four years as they set school records with 52 overall wins and 24 IIAC wins in the four seasons.

- McDonald and McKee Chosen 1st Team All-IIAC –
Earning First Team All-Iowa Conference for the Spartans were seniors Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) and Sam McKee (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs). McDonald is a three time First Team honoree while it is the first time for McKee. 

McDonald led the IIAC in goals (21), points (49), game winners (6), shots (75), and shots on goal (34). He also finished fourth in assists with 7. He also set school career records in goals (49), points (110), game winners (15), shots (235), shots on goal (108), games played (76), and games started (76). McDonald also scored in five straight games two different times this season while also having seven multi-goal games. His 21 goals were the third best in Division III during the regular season.

McDonald became the first UD Men’s Soccer player to be named to the First Team three times as well as the first Spartan to be named All-IIAC all four years. McDonald was named to the First Team in 2010, 2011, and 2012 and Second Team Defender in 2009 as a freshman. He has also been named Second Team NSCAA All-Region in 2010 and 2011.

McKee finished the 2012 season with one goal and two assists. As the link between the defense and the forwards, he played a big part in the success the Spartans had on the offensive and defensive side of the field. McKee finished his time at UD with six goals and 13 assists while making 74 starts. He is a two time All-Iowa Conference selection after being Second Team in 2010. He was also named Honorable Mention Midfielder in 2011.

- Hager and Winkler Named to 2nd Team –
Sophomore defender Peter Hager (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) earned Second Team for the second consecutive season. Hager started all 18 games for the Spartans this season scoring one goal and assisting on another. He was also recently named First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District.

Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley), a junior midfielder, earned Second Team after being named to the First Team in 2011. Winkler finished the season with nine goals and three assists. 

Iowa Conference champion Loras has nine all-conference performers, including six first-teamers. Dubuque and Luther each had four all-league selections, while Central and Wartburg both received three honors. All of Wartburg’s honorees were on the first team. Simpson placed a pair of individuals on the second team and Coe had its lone representative on the first team.
