Spartans Stunned in IIAC Semi-finals

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team was stunned in double overtime of the Iowa Conference Semi-Finals by Central College (8-9-3). The 2-1 loss at Oyen Field on Wednesday night ended the #2 seeded Spartans season. UD finishes the 2012 season with 11-6-1 record.

The Dutch were able to get on the scoreboard first after a UD handball in the box gave Central a penalty kick. Central capitalized on the penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. The Spartans answered back with their own goal in the 34th minute when Derek Garcia (Mission Viego, Calif./Tesoro) scored on a header off a corner kick feed from Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley). The goal was the fifth of the year for Garcia.

UD controlled the first half holding a 12-5 advantage in shots and 3-0 lead in corner kicks. The two team were unable to score during the second half with Central holding a 4-3 shot advantage.

The action picked up in the first overtime as each team finishing with three shots but none on goal in the ten minute overtime session. Central would break the 1-1 tie on a goal two minutes into the second overtime.

Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) finished with three saves and two goals allowed in goal.

Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) led UD with seven shots while Winkler chipped in six shots of his own. UD finished the game with a 19-13 lead in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks.
