Spartans Hold on to Victory in Offensive Shoot Out

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team held on as the visiting Simpson Storm rallied back after trailing 38-6 to put in scare into the Spartans when the offensive shoot out finally ended 45-40 in favor of the host Spartans. The two teams would finish with over 1,000 combined yards, 154 offensive plays, and 52 first downs.

The Spartans C.J. Watson came up with the big play late in the game as the Storm was driving in the final minute. Watson intercepted a Taylor Nelson pass on the UD 19 yard line with :32 seconds to play to secure the Spartan victory. The Spartans defense picked off four Storm passes and finished with seven tackles for losses in the victory. Anthony Losasso led UD with 10 tackles and Malcolm Stewart finished with nine solo tackles which included two interceptions for 32 yards.

Wyatt Hanus completed 23-33 pass attempts for 376 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite target was Tyler Rutenbeck who caught 8 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns. His longest touchdown of the afternoon was from 80 yards in the second quarter. Kyle Acker carried the ball 20 times for 78 yards and a touchdown. UD finished with 392 yards through the air and rushed for 90 yards. Heriberto Sandoval was perfect on the day, connecting on six extra point tries and an 18 yard field goal.

The Spartans will travel across town next week to face the Loras Duhawks in a battle for the key trophy. Game time is 1:00 p.m at the Rock Bowl.
