BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team played a complete game on Wednesday night combining a strong offensive attack with a lock down defense effort in route to a 7-0 victory over Cornell College (2-11-1). Six Spartans scored in the contest which saw UD out shoot Cornell 34-4. Dubuque improves to 8-5-2 overall and 6-2-1 at Oyen Field. The Spartans have won five straight games tying a school record from 2002.

The Spartan defense once again stepped up and kept the opponent from finding any breathing room on offense. Loisann DeLass (Albuquerque, N.M./Hohenfels), Chelsea Hawkins (Maryville Heights, Mo./Pattonville) and the Spartan defenders have now gone a school record 494 minutes without allowing a goal. DeLass earned her fifth victory of the season while Hawkins recorded three saves for the Spartans as each keeper played 45 minutes.

Sophomore forward Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) started the Spartan scoring attack in the seventh minute of action with two nearly identical goals less than a minute apart. Each time Siepler was able to out run the defense giving her a 1-on-1 situation with the goalkeeper.  Lisa Rosas (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) assisted on the first goal as Katie Lynn (Fox River Grove, Ill./Barrington) and Kim Trinco (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) assisting on the second. Siepler now has four goals on the season.

The next UD goal would come from Melissa Sawyer (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) on a corner kick that sailed past a large group of Spartans and Rams right at the net to give UD a 3-0 advantage. The goal was the second of the season for Sawyer and gave Dubuque a 3-0 lead.

Goals four and five for the Spartans were special as they were the first collegiate goals scored for Elise Chalus (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and Trinco. The Chalus goal came just 90 seconds after checking into the game. Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North)  assisted on each of the goals with Sawyer also picking up the assist on the Trinco goal.

Watkins, the Spartans leading scorer on the season would find the back of the net for herself in the 30th minute of action for her tenth goal of the year. Kayla Vaughan (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) and Trish Resner (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian) assisted on the goal.

The Spartans final goal of the game would come unassisted from Lynn with three minutes remaining in the first period for a 7-0 UD lead.

UD is unbeaten in its last seven games with a record of 6-0-1 in that time.  The Spartans have outscored their opponents 20-2 over that span with five shutouts.
