Spartans Tie with Augie

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team stepped out of the Iowa Conference on Tuesday night with Augustana College (6-6-3) coming to Oyen Field. The Spartans and Augustana played to a 1-1 double overtime tie.  UD is now 10-4-1 on the season and 6-2-1 at home.

The Spartans scored first in the 31st minute when Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) drilled home a shot from the top of the box. The turn-around shot on goal came after Brayden Prothero (Gwa Beach, Hawaii/Kamehameha) put a long pass behind the defense for Derek Garcia (Mission Viego, Calif./Tesoro). Garcia then sent a cross to Winkler for the 1-0 UD lead.

UD finished the first period with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and out shot Augie 10-7.

Augustana scored in the 78th minute to force overtime.

Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) finished with six saves and one goal allowed in 110:00 minutes in goal.

Winkler led Dubuque with six shots in the game. D.Garcia had five shots in his first start of the season.
