Spartans Drop IIAC Match-up with Coe

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team and Coe College dealt with less than ideal playing condition on Saturday, afternoon on Oyen Field. The Kohawks dealt UD a 2-1 loss on Homecoming and Senior Day. The Spartans are now 10-4-0 on the season and 4-1-0 in the Iowa Conference.

The Spartans Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) scored for the fourth straight game with his goal in the 8th minute to give UD a 1-0 lead. Jack Stefanski (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) and Peter Hager (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) assisted on the goal. McDonald’s 19 goals this season place him tied for second in Division III.

Coe answered with two goals in the first period to lead the game 2-1. The Spartans outshot the Kohawks 9-6 for the period and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

McDonald, Derek Garcia (Mission Viego, Calif./Tesoro), Jon Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./Buchanan), and Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) all finished with three shots to lead the Spartans. UD held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and 19-6 edge in shots for the game.

Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) finished with three saves and two goals allowed in 90 minutes in goal for UD.

Following the game, seniors McDonald, Tyler Cuchna (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove), Sam McKee (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs), and Ryan Zurbuchen (Madison, Wis./Madison West) were honored for all that they have accomplished while at UD.

GAME NOTES:  UD is now 9-3-1 vs. Coe all-time… Dubuque had won the previous four meeting against Coe… through 14 games, Tyler Cuchna, Peter Hager, Nick McDonald, Sam McKee, Jake O’Rourke, Jack Stefanski, and Brandon Wiley have each started every game…  McDonald has scored in 9 of the last 10 games… Stefanski now has 11 assists while at UD, the 8th highest total in school history.
