BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team pulled out a thrilling 2-1 victory over Luther College on Wednesday night at Oyen Field. Three time Iowa Conference Offensive Performer of the Week Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) scored two goals in the game setting a new school record for career goals with 46. UD is now 10-3-0 on the season and tied for the IIAC lead at 4-0-0.

The Spartans wasted little time getting on the scoreboard within the first three minutes of action when Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim) found McDonald for the game’s first goal and McDonald’s 17th of the season. McDonald and Wiley would connect again in the 38th minute to put UD ahead 2-0 before the half. McDonalds 18 goal of the season tied him for second place in Division III. Wiley’s two assists give him a total of eight for the season, tying him for seventh in DIII.

Leading 2-0 throughout the second half, the Spartans stopped attack after attack from the Norse thanks to the stellar defense of Tyler Cuchna (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove), Peter Hager (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), Zachary Matuszak (St. Charles, Ill./North), and Jack Stefanski (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel). Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) would end the game with one save but made numerous stops on potentially dangerous crosses.

Luther would get on the scoredboard with less than five minutes remaining when they connected on a penalty kick.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will honor their five seniors during Homecoming on October 13th as they play Coe College (4-10-1, 1-3) at 3:00 pm. The seniors will be recognized for all that they have done while at UD between the Women’s and Men’s game.

GAME NOTES: UD is now 4-7-1 all-time versus Luther… The Spartans have won four out of the last five against Luther with the only loss coming last season… UD has won eight of their last nine games this season…
