Spartans Win 1-0 Thriller

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team pulled out a 1-0 win over Simpson College on Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field. The Spartans scored in the 9th minute and then played lock down defense for the next 81 minutes to earn their second consecutive shutout. UD is now 5-5-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Iowa Conference.

Looking to pick up their first IIAC win of the year, the Spartans jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on an Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) goal. The Watkins goals came after Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) pushed the ball up the field to the goal line and sent a cross to the middle of the pitch. Watkins has now scored in five straight games.

Spartans goalkeeper Loisann DeLass (Albuquerque, N.M./Hohenfels) recorded her second consecutive shutout. DeLass finished with two saves in the game.

Dubuque finished the game with an 11-3 advantage in shots. Kayla Vaughan (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) finished with a team high four shots and two shots on goal.

Simpson made one last push to tie the game with under a minute left getting off a shot on goal with 42 seconds remaining that DeLass saved.
