Spartans Win 6th Straight

PELLA, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team matched a school record with their sixth straight win on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over the Central College Dutch. The Dubuque bench would account for both goals and assists in the game. The victory moves the Spartans into a tie atop the Iowa Conference at 2-0. UD is 8-2 overall on the season.

After a back and forth struggle for the first 40 minutes of the first half, the UD bench put the Spartans up 1-0 on a Jon Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) goal in the 41st minute. Fellow reserve Derek Garcia (Mission Viego, Calif./Tesoro) assisted on the play. Dubuque would hold a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal and outshot the Dutch 8-5 in the first period.

The Spartans would pick up an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Garcia scored to put Dubuque up 2-0. Jesse Hanes (Vincenza, Italy/Vincenza) assisted on the goal.

Goalkeeper Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) continued his stellar play in goal with his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. O’Rourke lowered his goals against average to 0.71.  

Freshman Tyler Lewis (Baltimore, Md./Vilseck) finished the day with a team high four shots with two being on goal. Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim) and Sam McKee (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) each finished with two shots on goal. UD would hold a 17-12 advantage in shots for the game.

The Spartans were ranked #7 in the NSCAA North Region Poll released on September 25thand with a perfect 2-0 week will look to move up in the rankings again when the next poll is released on October 2rd.

UP NEXT: The Spartans begin a five game home stand on Tuesday, October 2nd when they take on North Park University (4-2-3) at Oyen Field. Game time is 8:00 pm.
