BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team found its offense on Wednesday night at Oyen Field on their way to a 5-1 win over UW-Platteville. The win was the first of the 2012 season for UD at Oyen Field. Spartan forward Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) led the Spartans with four goals in the contest, including two in one minute and five seconds. Dubuque is now 3-5-1 on the season.

Watkins four goal game was the most for a Spartan since Kim Monigold scored four on August 1, 2006. Watkins first goal of the game came on a header in the 14th minute off a Melissa Sawyer (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) feed from near midfield. The Spartans went into halftime leading 1-0. UD outshot UW-P 11-7 in the first period.

Goals two, three, and four for Watkins all came within an eight minute span in the second half between the 55:20 and 63:21 mark. The first two goals of the half each came off crosses from Megan Strawn (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North). Watkins finished her day with a breakaway goal off a Lisa Rosas (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) pass to put UD up 4-0. Watkins managed to score on four of her five total shot attempts in the game and has a team high six goals on the season.

Already leading 4-0, UD managed to score again when Sawyer stepped up to attempt a penalty kick after Strawn was taken down in the box on a breakaway. Sawyer froze the keeper and scored on a liner into the lower right side of the goal.

Kim Trinco (Schaumberg, Ill./Conant) finished with four shots from her defense position while assisting the defense as they shut down the Pioneer attack.

Making her first start of the season in goal, Loisann DeLass (Albuquerque, N.M./Hohenfels) finished with eight saves and no goals allowed in 68 plus minutes played. Kari Dahlen (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) played the last 21:57 in goal finishing with one save and one goal allowed.

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to Iowa Conference action when they travel to Pella, Iowa on Saturday, September 29th to play Central College (8-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 IIAC).  Game time is 1:00pm. Live Video and stats for the game can be found at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/dbq.portal#
