Spartans Down Dutch on the Road

PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team accomplished a feat which hasn't been done since 1995. UD captured their first match against the Dutch 3-2 on Tuesday evening on the road in Pella. UD dropped the first two sets 14-25, 23-25, before coach April Elsbernd re-grouped her team and rallied back 25-16, 25-20, 15-9 to capture in the Iowa Conference tilt.

Strong attacks up front and 68 team digs helped the Spartans improve to 2-1 in the IIAC and 9-8 overall. Freshman Klaudia Basierak led the offense with 17 kills and Amy Tranel added 13 kills in the victory. UD had not won more than a set against the Dutch since 1995, but served up 10 aces in the match while committing just five receiving errors. Meggie Schmidt and Becca Thiltgen led with three service aces each. Schmidt served up the ball for 40 assists en route to helping her teammates finish the night hitting .233.

The Spartans return home to host UW-Platteville, UW-Stout, and Loras on Friday night in Stoltz Sports Center and McCormick Gym beginning at 5:30 p.m.
