BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team welcomed Bethel University to Oyen Field on Tuesday night and sent them home with a 7-1 defeat. The Spartans exploded for five second half goals, three in the first six minutes. UD improved to 5-2 on the season and 4-0 at home.

The Spartans started the scoring on a Tyler Cuchna (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) header off a corner kick from Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) in the 9th minute. Winker would then score a goal of his own in the 22nd minute on a breakaway down the left sideline. With only the goalkeeper between him and a goal, Winkler went to the upper right corner of the goal to put UD up 2-0. Assisting on the goal were Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim) and Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove).

After Coach Brad Johnson fired up the team with his halftime speech, the Spartans turned up their aggressiveness and would not look back on their way to five goals. Winkler started off the scoring with his second goal of the game on a high floater that crossed just out of the keepers reach.

McDonald would follow up with two goal of his own in a 75 second stretch. Both goals came after McDonald beat the defense leaving him a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Cuchna assisted on the first goal. The two goals pushed McDonalds season total to eight goals in seven games.

Winkler would cap a furious Spartan scoring string with his third goal of the game in the 58th minute. Winkler’s three goal day matched his season total going into the game. Setting up the goal were Wiley and Jack Stefanski (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) who each made picture perfect passes to put UD up 6-0.

The Spartan offense continued its aggressive play leading to Derek Garcia (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tersoro) scoring his second goal of the season. Jon Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./ Troy Buchanan) and Ryan Zurbuchen (Madison, Wis./Madison West) assisted on the play.

With the Spartans offense controlling the ball the majority of the time, Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) finished with one save in 70 minutes of action in goal. Riley Jensen (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) made his college debut relieving O’Rourke to play out the final 20 minutes. Jensen would allow the only Bethel goal on a penalty kick in the 79th minute of play.
