BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team continued its dominance over Cornell College with a 7-0 win on Wednesday night at Oyen Field. In the last four meetings UD has now outscored Cornell 20-0 and have won seven straight. UD is now 3-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 at home.

Dubuque wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with a Ryan Zurbuchen (Madison, Wis./Madison West) goal in the fourth minute of play. Assisting on the play was Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim). McDonald would get in on the scoring just seconds later to put UD up 2-0. The McDonald goal was his fifth of the season, good for second in the Iowa Conference (IIAC).

The final Spartans goal of the first period would come from Jesse Hanes (Vincenza, Italy/Vincenza) in the 29th minute. Hanes was able to find space in front of the goal for a clean look but was denied by the goalkeeper. The ensuing rebound would bounce back to him for a second chance that he would take advantage of to put UD ahead 3-0.

UD dominated the first period in all aspects of the game. On top of a 3-0 lead, the Spartans out shot Cornell 23-1 while holding a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Dubuque defense did not allow a shot on goal in the period.

The halftime intermission did little to slow the Spartans attack as Sam McKee (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) worked his way through the Ram defense to quickly score three minutes into the second period. McDonald recorded his second assist of the game on the play. The assist for McDonald pushed his season point total to 14, tops in the IIAC.

With the game winding down, the Spartans pushed three more goals across with Peter Hager (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), Daniel Morris (Heidelberg, Germany/Heidelberg), and Derek Garcia (Mission Viego, Calif./Tesoro) all scoring. Wiley picked up his second assist of the game on the Hager goal.

Keeper Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) played the entire game in goal to earn his second shutout of the season. O’Rourke stopped the only shot on goal he faced in the game. O’Rourke has allowed just two goals in the last four games.

UD finished the game with a 34-2 advantage in shots and 12-0 lead in corner kicks.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will look for their first road victory of the season on Friday, September 14 when they travel to Elmhurst, Ill. for a 7:00 pm match against Elmhurst College (3-2). UD defeated Elmhurst 3-0 last season.
