Spartans Win First Match of Season

DES MOINES/PELLA, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 9-0 non-conference victory over Grand View College on Friday, September 7th. UD continued its road trip with 7-2 losses to Central College and Simpson College on Saturday, September 8th. The Spartans are now 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in the Iowa Conference.
Nichole Schmaltz (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) finished the Grand View match a perfect 2-0 without losing a point, finishing #1 singles 6-0, 6-0 and teaming with Stephanie LoCasto (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) to win 8-0 at #2 doubles. LoCasto won at #3 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Ashley Schlueter (Hiawatha, Iowa/Kennedy) earned the Spartans biggest win of the Central match with a 6-0, 6-7 (0-4), 1-0 (5-0) victory at #2 singles. Alexandra Dixon (Camanche, Iowa/Camanche) won at #3 singles because of an injury default while leading 4-3 in the first set.
Aoi Karino (Yokata, Japan/Yokata) finished the match versus Simpson 2-0 earning wins at #5 singles, 6-4, 6-1, and #3 doubles with Janine Wegner (Pittsville, Wis./Pittsville) at 8-3.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will return home on Tuesday, September 11th when they take on Monmouth College (0-2) at 4:00 pm. UD will also be in action on Wednesday, September 12th against Luther College (4-0) at Frank Farber Tennis Courts beginning at 4:00 pm.
