Spartans Win on Penalty Kick

WINONA, MINNESOTA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team won in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field. The Spartans 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s University came on a penalty kick with less than five minutes remaining in the game. UD is now 2-0-1 on the season.
With under five minutes left to play and a tied game, the Spartans constant pressure forced a handball in the box setting up Elizabeth Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) for a penalty kick opportunity. With the clock running down, Frazier stepped up and beat the goalkeeper for the eventual game winning goal and her second score of the day.
Frazier started the Spartan scoring early in the first period with her goal off a Lauren Waddell (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere) feed in the 14th minute of play. The Frazier goal was the only score in a half of play that was dominated by UD. The Spartans finished the half with a 12-1 advantage in shots and an 8-1 lead in corner kicks. The defense did not allow a shot on goal by the Cardinals in the first period.
The teams played a nearly even second period with St. Mary’s scoring in the 71st minute of play to tie the game. The goal was the first allowed on the season by Chelsea Hawkins (Maryville, Mo./Pattonville) snapping a 271 minute scoreless streak. Each team finished the second half with four shots on goal while Dubuque edged SMU with a 14-9 advantage in total shots.
Frazier led UD with eight shots, four of which were on goal. While unable to score, Kayla Vaughan (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) did record three shots on goal and five total shots.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will play their third straight road game on Sunday, September 9th when they travel to Whitewater, Wis. to take on UW-Whitewater (0-2) at 2:30 pm.
