Spartans Net First Win of the Season

APPLETON, WISCONSIN – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team controlled the game from the very beginning on their way to a 2-0 win over Lawrence University on Tuesday night. UD finished the game with a 34-4 shot advantage.

The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 advantage on a Megan Strawn (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) goal in the 36th minute of play. Assisting on the play was Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North).  Going into halftime up 1-0, UD held a 10-3 advantage in shots, and a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.

Holding onto a 1-0 lead for most of the second half, the Spartans opened up a 2-0 lead on a Watkins goal off of a Lauren Waddell (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere) corner kick in the 76th minute. Watkins finished the game with nine shots and four shots on goal.

Chelsea Hawkins (Maryville Heights, Mo./Pattonville) posted her second consecutive shutout while also making three saves. The Spartan defense in front of Hawkins did an amazing job of limiting Lawrence to one shot in the second half.

The Spartans controlled the ball for the majority of the second half holding a 24-1 edge in shots, an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks, and registered 14 shots on goal while allowing zero.

Kayla Vaughan (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) ended the game with five shots, two of which were on goal. Elizabeth Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) would finish with four shots on goal.
