Spartans Open Season with 0-0 Tie

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team kicked off the 2012 Season with a 0-0 tie on Friday night versus the defending Midwest Conference champion Carroll University Pioneers at Oyen Field.

Making her first career start in goal, sophomore Chelsea Hawkins (Maryville Heights, Mo./Pattonville) stopped all six shots on goal from the Pioneers in the double overtime thriller. Four of Hawkins six saves came in the first period.

On the offensive end, Elizabeth Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led the Spartan attack with five shots. Lauren Waddell (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere) would finish with a team high three shots on goal.

Overall, the Spartans finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots and 9-6 edge in shots on goal.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will return to action on Tuesday, September 7 when they travel to Appleton, Wisconsin to take on Lawrence University at 4:30 pm.

GAME NOTES: The Spartans opened the season with a tie for the first time in school history… It also marked the first time since 2009 that UD did not give up a goal in the first game of the year… The tie moves the series record with Carroll to 0-1-1 with the only other meeting being a 2-1 loss in 2008… The Spartans are now 51-40-6 at home all-time… It is the fourth 0-0 tie in the programs history.
