Spartans Lose 3-2 on the Road

BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS – The University of Dubuque Men’s Soccer team kicked off the 2012 Season with a tough 3-2 loss on the road to Illinois Wesleyan on Friday night.  The final goal of the game came on an Illinois Wesleyan penalty kick with a little more than three minutes left in the game.

The offensive star for the Spartans in the game was Nick McDonald (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) with two goals. McDonald ended the contest with a team high five shots, four of which were on goal. Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) finished with two shots on goal and four total shots.

Making his third career start in goal for the Spartans was Jake O’Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon). He would finish the game with eight saves and three goals allowed in 90:00 minutes of action.

The Spartans trailed 2-0 after 18 minutes of play before McDonald goals in the 31st and 49th minute tied the game up at 2-2. Kyle Gorgol scored all three goals for Illinois Wesleyan.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will return home on Sunday, September 2 when Carroll University travels to Oyen Field for a 3:00 pm match.

GAME NOTES: The Spartans had won the previous three season opening games by a combined score of 9-0… UD is now 0-3-0 against Illinois Wesleyan all-time… Dubuque is now 43-52-8 all-time on the road… McDonald has now scored 30 career goals in 60 games played… McDonald moved into third place in school history with 30 career goals and is tied for third in career points with 65.
