Spartans Receive 2011-12 AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that the University of Dubuque was one of 535 teams to receive the 2011-12 AVCA Team Academic Award.

It is the third straight season the Spartans have earned the award and seventh time since 2000. UD was one of 90 teams in Division III and one of five Iowa Conference teams to earn the honor. Leading UD towards this honor were the Spartans six Iowa Conference All-Academic Team performers; Linday Ellinor (Freeport, Ill./Freeport), Chelsea Jones (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Marion), Lauren McKissick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf), Laura Menta (Grayslake, Ill./Grayslake Community), Sara Schutte (Castalia, Iowa/Postville), and Jessica Serd (Lakenheath, U.K./Lakenheath American).

The Spartans open the 2012 season on Friday, August 31st at the Beloit College Buc Blast Tournament in Beloit, Wis. The first match of the year will be versus Hamline College at 6:30 p.m. UD will play an exhibition match against Clarke University on Wednesday, August 29th at 7:30 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center.  

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 20-year history, with exactly 4,828 awards been given out in total.
