Hanus Leads Three Spartans on Beyond Sports Network Pre-season Team

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque football team will showcase three individuals who were named to the 2012 Beyond Sports Network (BSN) DIII Football Pre-Season Team. The Spartans return from an Iowa Conference Championship season in 2012 and will showcase a lot of new faces in pre-season camp expected to reach 160 student-athletes.

Wyatt Hanus (Sr., 6-4, 200 lbs., QB, Traer, Iowa/North Tama) was honored as a BSN First Team Selection and one of three quarterbacks to earn the honor. Hanus finished last season with 44 passing touchdowns to lead the NCAA statistics. He was responsible for 25.27 points a game (1st in NCAA), in passing efficiency was 189.36 (2nd in NCAA). He completed 265 of 363 passing attempts with just eight interceptions for 3,490 yards in 2011.

Hanus earned the Joseph T. St. Lawrence Award presented by Crons, which signifies the most outstanding Junior in Division III football in 2011. He led UD to an Iowa Conference title, an NCAA playoff berth and a 9-2 record, Dubuque’s best record since 1979. Hanus set single season school records for passing yards (3,490), total offense (3,507), pass completions (265), and passing touchdowns (44). He also set school records for touchdowns in a game (7) against Buena Vista and completions in a game (33) versus Central and Buena Vista.

His seven touchdowns in victory over Buena Vista set an Iowa Conference record. In conference only action, Hanus threw for an IIAC record 35 touchdowns. For his work on the field, Hanus was named Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week (Week 4 and 8), Iowa Conference Football Offensive Player of the Week (Week 4 and 8), and Beyond Sports Network Performer of the Week (Week 4 and 8). Hanus, a double major in accounting and business marketing, was named Capital One Academic All-Region VIII First Team and a Capital One Academic All-America Team member, one of four Spartans to achieve the honors last season.

Miles Hookstead (Sr., 6-5, 250 lbs., TE, Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) was named to the second team and was one of two tight ends to be named to second team. He earned Second Team All-Iowa Conference honors and First Team Academic All-America in 2011. Hookstead caught 33 passes for 349 yards and six touchdowns for the Spartans. He started all 11 games last season, 10 at tight end and one at tackle. Over his three years as a Spartan, he started 30 of 31 games in football. He is a two-sport athlete lettering in basketball for UD.

Richard Skaife (Sr., 6-2, 240 lbs., OL, DeForest, Wis./DeForest) honored as a Third Team Offensive Lineman. Skaife was the center and helped the Spartans to their first IIAC Championship since 1980. UD’s offense finished 2011 ranked 4th in total offense (489.91 yards a game). The Spartans offensive line allowed just 1.91 sacks a game in 2011.

The Spartans will face a challenging 2012 schedule when they kick-off their season at home against Augustana College (IL) on Sept. 1 under the lights on Chalmers Field at 6:00 p.m.
