Krenger Named Second Team All-Conference

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced its All-Conference Teams and major awards for the 2012 baseball season. Luther College senior second baseman Chris Reynolds has been named the 2012 IIAC Baseball Position Player of the Year, Central College senior Joel Pulliam has been named the 2012 IIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Year and Central College head coach Adam Stevens has been named 2012 IIAC Baseball Coach of the Year.

The Spartans Paul Krenger (Chicago, Ill./Van Steuben) earned Second Team All-Iowa Conference Starting Pitcher. The 2012 Spartans finished the season with an 18-22 record. As a pitching staff the Spartans finished with the third fewest walks allowed (68) with the fourth most strikeouts (130) in Iowa Conference games. They also led the IIAC with 15 runners caught stealing. UD finished the season second in sacrifice bunts (34), fewest strikeouts as a hitter (184), and runners caught stealing (19) in all games played.

Krenger had one of the most dominating seasons on the mound in UD history in 2012. He set a new single season school record with a 1.74-ERA (40thlowest in DIII) while allowing only 33 hits in 46.2 innings pitched. He allowed only 6.36 hits per nine innings, the 31st best ratio in Division III. Krenger finished his career at UD with 3.30-ERA, the lowest of any Spartan pitcher in the programs history. In all games played, he led the Iowa Conference in batting average against (.200), fewest hits allowed (33), and fewest runs
allowed (9) while finishing with the second lowest earned run average (1.74). In IIAC only games, he had a league low 1.94-ERA and the sixth most strikeouts with 34. 

All nine institutions were represented on the All-Iowa Conference team led by IIAC Tournament champion Coe with a league-high six individuals including five on the first team. Wartburg matched Coe with six all-conference performers and
had four named to the first team. IIAC champion Central pulled down five all-IIAC honors including three first-teamers in addition to Pulliam’s Pitcher of the Year honor. Buena Vista, Luther and Simpson each had four all-league honorees followed by Cornell and Loras with two each and Dubuque with one.
