2015 IIAC Outdoor Performance List
INDIANOLA, Iowa - The host Simpson College Storm and Buxton Stadium is the site of the 2015 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Championships on May 7-9. Free admission on Thursday and $6 for adults and $3 for student on Friday and Saturday. Ticket gates open at noon on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. In the 2015 IIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships the Spartans women and men teams both placed third.
The University of Dubuque men’s and women’s track and field team features 28, Top-5 Iowa Conference marks and seven Iowa Conference leaders heading into the Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships this Thursday through Saturday hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
UD will look to climb the IIAC hierarchy after finishing fourth on the men’s side and fifth on the women’s side in the Iowa Conference outdoor championships a year ago.
The Spartans head into the IIAC Championships having faced most of the IIAC schools in their seven outdoor meets. As always, it will be a competitive championship between the fourth-ranked conference nationally on the men’s side and the 10th best conference in the nation on the women’s side, according to USTFCCCA. Both genders feature one Top-30 team nationally with #16 Central representing the men, and #19 Wartburg anchoring the women. The Spartan men recently dropped out of the rankings after holding a Top-25 position for most of the year.
All front runners and contender lists are based on heat sheets or list of participants in each event. An athlete may lead conference or carry Top-5 mark, but it’s null and void if he/she isn’t participating in the event.
Front “Runners” (Lead the Iowa Conference)
Men
A trio of Spartan men’s field events pace the conference, along with decathlon specialist, senior Tyler Dobratz.
Dobratz, who sits second in the Iowa Conference in the decathlon with 6071 points, has moved into the No. 1 contender slot since the current conference leader and national contender (6770), Eric Larson from Central, will not compete in the multi-event competition this weekend.
The reigning Iowa Conference Track Performer of the Week, DuVaun Goodlow, took home his second high jump victory of the outdoor season last weekend after jumping 2.06m/6’9”, beating his previous outdoor personal best by 1”. His new mark now leads the conference by 1.5" heading into next week.
Kebba Bojang, the IIAC's triple jump leader at 47'2.5", needed only a 13.91m/45'7.75" effort to take home the victory last weekend at the Spartan Twilight. It gave Bojang his third triple jump victory of the outdoor season.
Defending 2014 Outdoor Iowa Conference Pole Vault and 2014 Outdoor National Pole Vault Champion, Rick Valcin, returns to the arena after missing the entirety of indoor season due to injury. The senior paces the conference by over two feet after eclipsing the 5.10m/16’8.75” mark at the University of Dubuque Invitational on April 18.
The 4x100m relay (varied) set a time of 41.84 at the University of Dubuque Invitational on April 18 in their lone win of the season.
Women
Junior Nicole Forson set a monstrous personal record in winning the hammer throw with a toss of 50.89m/166'11" last weekend at the Spartan Twilight. She reset the school record and outdid her previous best of 48.72m/159'10'. Forson now leads the conference by nearly seven feet.
Alexis Higgins won her second straight high jump competition at last weekend’s Spartan Twilight after placing first at the Dr. Tucker Loras Open two weeks ago. The junior eclipsed 1.64m/5’4.5” to claim the victory. Higgins leapt 5'6" at the University of Dubuque Invitational a few weeks earlier and that mark is tied for the Iowa Conference lead heading into this weekend.
Nikki McKenzie, winner of the last three Iowa Conference Triple Jump championships (both indoor and outdoor) once again finds herself out front after a jump of 37’4”/11.38m at the University of Dubuque Invitational (April 18). The senior owns the indoor and outdoor long jump school records and the indoor triple jump record.
Contenders (Top-3 mark)
Men
The fab freshman, Alex Link, brought home his second discus win of the year after launching a 44.57m/146'3" toss. His effort now ranks second in the IIAC and sits third all-time in UD history.
Nicholas Kazmierczak, 2015 Indoor Iowa Conference Pole Vault Champion, follows Valcin in the pole vault (14’5.25”/4.40m) and sits third.
Mario-John Otchere set a personal record in the hammer throw at the Spartan Twilight after tossing a 49.69m/163'0" for his first win outdoors. The sophomore now sits third in the conference. Otchere has set a personal record by at least four feet in his last three meets.

Fabiola Ortiz is currently second in the Iowa Conference after a personal and school record in her second career 3000m steeplechase (11:34.82) at the Dr. Tucker Loras Open (April 25).
Amy Tranel, a senior, is in second place in the javelin throw (122’0”/37.19m) after her toss at the UW-Platteville Invitational (April 18)..
