Writing Consulting

The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides peer and professional writing consultants. In supporting the ASC's overall mission, the writing consulting program aims to help UD students become self-determined, motivated, and independent writers over time. Whether working with students one-on-one or in small groups, our writing consultants aim to equip all writers with the confidence and strategies to engage successfully in the writing process. All writing consulting services are free to University of Dubuque students.

Who Are Our Writing Consultants?

In addition to two professional writing consultants, we have several peer writing consultants who are carefully selected on the basis of academic skill, leadership, character, and the ability to communicate with their peers from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds. They are trained and supervised by the ASC’s professional staff, and must meet the following qualifications:

  • have at least a sophomore standing
  • maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • receive a faculty recommendation letter that speaks to their writing abilities

As successful students, peer consultants share their knowledge and love of writing, and they help establish a friendly, inclusive environment that fosters creativity and collaboration. If you’re interested in becoming a writing consultant, please contact Carly Stork, at CStork@dbq.edu.

How Can You Make an Appointment?

The ASC uses a web-based appointment scheduling system known as WCOnline. This system allows students to view ASC writing consultant schedules and make appointments at the students' convenience. It also allows students to attach a draft of their writing for a consultant to review in advance of the appointment. For more instructions, see the Learning Support Services page or click here.

Please Note:

Students are always welcome to drop by the ASC to request assistance without an appointment, but writing consultant availability is not guaranteed. To ensure help will be available, please book an appointment in advance via WCOnline or by calling the ASC at 563.589.3262.

The UD Online Writing Lab (OWL)

The ASC also provides online writing assistance. If you are part of an online course or the LIFE program or are unable to meet with a writing consultant in person, you can utilize this alternative. Send your writing assignment (as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf document) to OWL@dbq.edu. A writing consultant will then offer you the same types of suggestions you would receive in a traditional session. Writing consultants will not simply edit your papers—they address higher order concerns (organization, thesis support, etc.) before looking at lower order concerns (grammar, punctuation, etc.). If using this resource, please plan ahead as documents submitted to the OWL may require up to 48 hours to be reviewed by a writing consultant.

Please note that students enrolled in ENG 090 and COM 101 cannot make appointments via the UD OWL, and group papers are not allowed either. For help in those classes—or with group writing assignments—please visit the ASC.
