Jan 30, 2019
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team traveled down the road on Wednesday afternoon to take on Loras College, but fell to the Duhawks, 104-48.
The outside temperature did not slow the Spartans at the beginning of the game, as UD raced out to a quick 6-2 behind four points from Kia Dwight in the opening 90 seconds. However, Loras’ offense quickly found its rhythm and went on a 14-0 run over a two and a half minute span. The Spartans could not find an answer to the Loras offense for the rest of the first half, trailing 33-17 after the opening quarter and 66-27 at halftime.
In the first half, the Spartans struggled to keep Loras out of transition, allowing 22 fast break points to the Duhawks and 19 points off of 16 UD turnovers. Kia Dwight and McKenzie Maahs both knocked down four shots in the first half to share a team-high eight points at the break.
After giving up 62 points in the first half, the Spartans limited to Duhawks to 42 points in the second half, but the Spartan offense was stifled and could only score 21 second half points.
For the game, the Spartans were led by Miah Smith who scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half. Smith also hauled in 15 rebounds to finish off the double-double. McKenzie Maahs was limited to just two points in the second half but still reached double-figures with 10 points on 5-7 shooting from the field. As a team, UD shot 31.3% from the field and a frigid 6.3% (1-16) from three.
The Spartans are at home on Saturday afternoon when they host the Central College Dutch at 2:00 p.m.
