Women’s Lacrosse Win Streak Snapped at Aurora

Apr 5, 2016

AURORA, Ill. – Sophomore Sara Rose came off the bench to score a season-high two goals, but the University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team couldn’t overcome an early 5-0 deficit in 10-7 defeat at Aurora University on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Kelly Wetherald added two goals, and was held to less than three scores for only the second time this season as the Spartans were limited to under 10 goals for the first time in 2016.

Rose and Wetherald netted the Spartan only goals of the first half at the 4:23 and 3:16 marks, respectively, as they trailed 5-2 at the break.

Wetherald’s final goal cut the Aurora (5-5) lead to 8-5 with 17:53 left, but Aurora responded with two straight goals to secure the comfortable 10-5 lead. UD midfielder Alora Esparza's score with 40 seconds left provided the final tally as Aurora won its fourth straight.

Aurora was coming off three straight wins over Cornell, Wartburg, and Loras by the combined score of 53-6. The Spartans defeated Wartburg, 15-4, and Cornell, 21-4, earlier this season and face Loras on April 12.

The Spartans (7-2) collected a season-high 49 ground balls and just beat out Aurora in turnovers, 29-30, but were outdone in shots, 33-19.

UD’s Breann Tjaarda snagged a career-high 11 ground balls, while posting one goal and two assists on the afternoon.

UD dropped to 1-3 in the all-time series against Aurora.

The Spartans host Carroll University this Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m.
