Apr 2, 2016

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team mustered seven hits in dropping their first two Iowa Conference contests against Coe, 5-0, and 10-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Game One
Spartans fall 5-0
Shortstop Gaetano Florio and first baseman Thomas Kempf totaled both Spartan hits as the Spartan offense was stymied throughout the afternoon behind a 7.0 inning complete game from Coe’s starter.

Coe (7-5, 3-1 Iowa Conference) was limited to just six hits, but utilized a three-run third inning that included three hits and three Spartans miscues, to push their lead to 4-0 through three innings.

Spartan starter Doug Van Dyke (1-1) allowed six hits and four earned run while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.

The Spartans (7-5, 0-2 Iowa Conference) left four runners on base and were shutout for the first time this season.

Game Two
Spartans fall 10-2
The Spartans took an early 2-0 lead thanks to rightfielder Jarad Clevenger’s RBI double, but saw the Kohawks score 10 unanswered runs over the next four innings in the 10-2 defeat.

Clevenger registered two of the Spartans five hits as the Spartan offense struggled again after leaving 10 men on base.

Coe scored 10 runs on 13 hits, but were limited late by the Spartans’ bullpen trifecta of Brian Sholty, Derek Kornfeind, and Nathan Schneiderman. Each pitched one inning and gave up a combined two hits and one earned run.

The Spartans look for their first win in conference play with another doubleheader against Coe this Sunday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m.
