Men's Tennis

The University of Dubuque men’s tennis program continues to improve and compete among the best in the country. In 2010, UD captured a singles USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship and the Spartans qualified an individual for the NCAA Division III National Singles Championships.

The squad will play around 20 matches per year as they travel around the Midwest as well as to Florida and Washington, D.C. over spring break. Six recently completed outdoor courts and four indoor multi-purpose courts allow the Spartans to play and practice in any weather conditions.

Claudio Giraldi was named Head Women’s and Men’s Tennis Coach at the University of Dubuque in the spring of 2014.

Despite being away on leave for military obligations in the fall of 2015, graduate assistant Dishon Deering filled in for Giraldi as the women's tennis team placed seventh in the IIAC.

Arantxa Martinez repeated as IIAC Flight "A" Singles runner up while freshman Marissa Joers won the IIAC Flight C Singles Championship. Martinez was named to the All-IIAC singles team while Joers was the only freshman named All-IIAC after securing spot on All-IIAC doubles team.

Giraldi led the men's team to its first IIAC Tournament berth since 2011-12 as the team fell in the first round of the IIAC Tournament hosted by Coe College in the spring of 2015.

On the women's side, Giraldi coached two All-Academic IIAC honorees and helped guide Arantxa Martinez and Ashley Schlueter to Flight "B" IIAC Doubles Championship, Stephanie LoCasto to Flight "C" Individual Championship, and Martinez to a runner-up finish in the Flight "A" Individual Championship, the best individual finish in the top flight since 1985.

Martinez, a freshman, had the best start of any women's tennis player after a 15-0 start was spoiled in the IIAC Championship game. Her undefeated IIAC slate earned her UD's first No. 1 overall seed heading into the IIAC Individual tournament in the fall of 2014. Martinez ended the season 16-1 and set single season wins record.

Schlueter left as the career leader in overall, single, and doubles wins while LoCasto won the Female Senior Spartan Academic Athlete of the Year award for highest senior GPA.

Giraldi was a four-year letter winner and a member of the men’s tennis team for the University of Dubuque Spartans from 2007-2011. In high school, Giraldi was 2005 Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) European Champion and runner-up in 2006 in tennis. He was a varsity soccer player and was a member of the 2006 DoDDS European Soccer Championship Team. He was named an All-Europe and All-Conference team honoree at SHAPE American High School.

Giraldi is a native of Rome, Italy and learned to play tennis in Santa Marinella, Italy from coach Carlo Oroni. He was a graduate from SHAPE American High School in Mons, Belgium. He graduated from University of Dubuque in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in human resources and a minor in marketing.
