John C. Chalmers spent time at the University of Dubuque in the early 1900's as Head Football Coach, Head Baseball Coach, and Head Men's Basketball Coach. Chalmers coached the football team for 11 years from 1914-1924 compiling a 41-22-5 record. His teams won three Hawkeye Conference Championships and one Conference of Iowa Colleges title. He also spent eight seasons as the baseball coach and two seasons as men's basketball coach. The Spartans football team play their games on Chalmers Field named after the legendary coach.
Before Dubuque, Chalmers spent time at the University of Iowa coaching the football (1903-05), baseball (1904-05), and men's basketball (1904-05) teams. His Hawkeye Football teams went 24-8 over three seasons. As a baseball coach, Chalmers had a record of 24-6. He left Iowa to establish his law practice in Dubuque where he would spend the next 56 years as a lawyer and later a judge.
