Eugene Rowell ('81)
Football - Wrestling
Eugene Rowell (C'81) was one of the biggest and best student-athletes to ever suit up for the University of Dubuque. Rowell was the 1979 NCAA Heavyweight Champion in Wrestling, Football All-American, and a three-time conference defensive lineman. He was named First Team All-Iowa Conference in 1978 and 1979 and a Second Team selection in 1980. The Spartans went 18-3 in conference action with three IIAC Championships in Rowell's three seasons.
Following graduation, Rowell signed as a free-agent with the Seattle Seahawks before an injury ended his season during training camp. After two seasons off to rehab, Rowell signed with the Chicago Bears becoming the last player cut from the eventual 1985 Super Bowl Champions led by Walter Payton and Mike Singletary. Rowell returned to the Bears again for training camp in 1986. He eventually made his NFL debut during the 1987 season, playing in one game with the Bears.
