Master in Physician Assistant Studies

Message from the Program Director/Founding Chair of Physician Assistant Program

Welcome to the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies Program at the University of Dubuque. Physician assistants (PAs) are health care professionals licensed and credentialed to practice medicine with physician supervision.  They obtain medical histories, perform physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, develop and execute treatment plans, assist in surgery, suggest preventive care measures and prescribe medications.  PAs provide medical care in a variety of settings such as clinics, emergency rooms, operating rooms, hospitals and rural satellite clinics.

The Physician Assistant Program is demanding, challenging and academically rigorous.  It is a graduate-level program, and as such, there are elements of the program that are directed at meeting the requirements of a master's degree.  We will make every effort to make those required elements relevant and interesting.  The program is 27 months, beginning with fifteen months of didactic study (course work), and followed by twelve months of clinical rotations.  Our experienced and motivated faculty and staff will guide your educational experiences and assist you as you progress through the program, helping you take full advantage of the wonderful resources and rich experiences available to you at the University of Dubuque.  The program faculty are committed to providing you with an excellent education in an atmosphere of mutual respect and support.

On behalf of the program faculty and staff, we hope you will consider the University of Dubuque Physician Assistant Program for your continuing education, leading to a wonderful career.  Please contact us with any questions about the program by e-mailing or by calling 563.589.3662.
