Baccalaureate, a UD tradition, is a worship service that allows us to say farewell to our graduating seniors, to celebrate their accomplishments, to give thanks for those who have supported them in reaching this milestone, and to commission graduates for service to church and world.

6:00 p.m.
Commencement Dinner
Students and their families are cordially invited to attend the University of Dubuque’s Commencement Dinner. Dinners for the graduates are complimentary; however, advanced reservation is required. Faculty and staff are also invited to attend and celebrate the Class of 2019.  A formal invitation with additional information and menu options was mailed to graduates and their families. 

SATURDAY, MAY 18, 2019

9:30 a.m.
Seminary Commencement Ceremony

Seminary Commencement will be streamed on Facebook Live and HERE.

11:30 a.m.
Commencement doors open at the Chlapaty Recreation & Wellness Center, located at Bennett and McCormick streets.  Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis – non-ticketed.  If you require special needs accommodations, please see the section on "Special Needs Parking/Seating" below.  No pets are allowed in the facility other than service animals.

A live feed of Twitter and Instagram posts with #2019UDgrad will be displayed on projection screens in Chlapaty Recreation & Wellness Center prior to Commencement. Join in the fun! 

12:00 p.m.
All undergraduate and graduate students assemble in the Veterans Memorial Indoor Practice Facility with full Commencement apparel on.  Upon arrival, please check in at the tables to receive honor cords and procedural instructions.  Signs will assist you along the way. 

12:15 p.m.
Faculty, administrators, and platform party assemble in the Veterans Memorial Indoor Practice Facility.
Academic regalia required – includes cap, gown, and hood. 

12:50 p.m.
Procession is led by the bagpiper from the Veterans Memorial Indoor Practice Facility to the south entrance of the Chlapaty Recreation & Wellness Center. 

Inclement Weather 
If we experience inclement weather on Commencement, we will not follow the above processional route. An inclement weather decision will be made Friday, May 17, at 12:00 p.m. and communicated via the UD website and e-mail to students, faculty, and staff.

1:00 p.m.
Commencement Ceremony begins in the Chlapaty Recreation & Wellness Center. The event will also be streamed live. Please check closer to Commencement for the link to the 2019 ceremony.

2:45 p.m.
Reception honoring all college graduates and their guests will be held immediately following the ceremony in Heritage Center. Please see below for meeting areas by academic department.

Monday, April 29, through Friday, May 17: Students may stop into the lower level of the Babka Bookstore to pick up their cap, gown, and tassel for Commencement Ceremonies. It is not necessary to pre-order. We will place a large bulk order and will have all sizes and heights of gowns available when you stop get your apparel. Undergraduate students can keep their cap, gown, and tassel; payment is included in the graduation fee.

Wednesday, May 1, through Friday, May 17: Students may stop into the lower level of the Babka Bookstore to pick up their cap, gown, and tassel for Commencement Ceremonies. Your hood will be bestowed upon you as part of the Commencement Ceremony. None of these items are rentals – you may keep all of them. The payment of this apparel is included in your graduation fee. 

Please pre-order these items through the Jostens website at  Click on the regalia tab and follow the instructions to place your order. Please have your accurate degree information when placing the cap and gown order. You will pick these items up at the Babka Bookstore. You must place your regalia order by March 8.

Beginning Monday, March 27, the Babka Bookstore will sell generic invitations for $1.50 each or $15.00 for a pack of 10.

  3. Or visit the Bookstore website and click on the Graduation Information slide on the main page of the website.  Follow the instructions.

  1. Click on Class Rings to the left and check out the styles. Order if you wish.
  2. Shop the website until you find your selection and go from there.

  • Each graduate will receive a diploma cover from the President at Commencement. May 2019 graduates who have met all degree requirements will receive their diploma by mail in June.
  • Any student who has not met their academic requirements for graduation will have their diploma held in the Registrar’s Office until such time as all degree requirements are met.
  • If a student has an outstanding college account balance, their diploma will be held in the Registrar’s Office until their account is cleared by the Student Accounts Office.

‌General parking is available on the University of Dubuque campus in the following locations and on adjacent streets.

  • Chlapaty Center parking lot at Bennett and McCormick streets
  • Finley lot at Finley and West streets
  • University Park Drive lot at Bennett Street and University Park Drive
  • Pearl Street lot adjacent to the corner of Pearl and McCormick streets
  • Dunlap Technology Center lot on McCormick Street
  • Lot across from Hardee's at the corner of McCormick Street and University Avenue
  • Severance lot at Grace and North Algona streets
  • Aitchison lots at Grace and Auburn streets

Students and guests are reminded not to park in roped off or posted no parking areas. For people having to park distances away, Trolleys of Dubuque will be circulating the adjacent streets providing shuttle service to the Chlapaty Center. 

Please look for the “SPECIAL NEEDS PARKING” signs outside the West Entrances (lower level) of the Chlapaty Center. While the amount of Handicapped Parking spots will be increased for Commencement, parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. A reserved seating section will also be available to accommodate Commencement guests who have special needs.  Reservations are required for the Special Needs Seating section. LifeTouch Photography will photograph each student receiving his/her diploma cover as well as take a second photograph with the diploma and flag background after exiting the stage. LifeTouch Photography will also take photographs before and after the ceremony. To view Commencement images, go to
